Beach Clean-up Vila do Conde 2022

MAELSTROM joins World Cleanup Day 2022, an international initiative that brings together volunteers, governments and organizations from more than 190 countries to tackle the global problem of Marine Litter (ML). This is also the mission of MAELSTROM, which on September 17th will promote a multidisciplinary beach clean-up in the city of Vila do Conde, Portugal.
The event is scheduled to start at 9 am at the headquarters of the Centre for Environmental Monitoring and Interpretation (CMIA) in Vila do Conde (41°20’39.6″N 8°44’44.0″W). After the reception of the participants, the event will start with an introduction to the impacts of marine litter on ecosystems and to the MAELSTROM project activities. Following this introduction, the clean-up activities will take place at the Senhora da Guia beach). The MAELSTROM App, a mobile application developed within the project will be used for litter identification. From 12 pm, educational activities for all ages on the effects of marine litter and microplastics will take place at CMIA headquarters.
During the event, the MAELSTROM team will also present the Bubble Barrier, a technological solution for the collection of marine litter in rivers which will be implemented in Vila do Conde in the next months. The Bubble Barrier was developed by The Great Bubble Barrier, a partner of the MAELSTROM project.
The event is organized by the Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research of the University of Porto (CIIMAR-UP), The Great Bubble Barrier and CIMA Research Foundation in partnership with the Centre for Environmental Monitoring and Interpretation (CMIA) and Municipality of Vila do Conde. The event will also count with the support of LIPOR (Intermunicipalized Waste Management Service of Greater Porto) and UNIFARDAS.
