And read more about BlueMissionAA hereThe theme of this fourth MAELSTROM webinar is “One Ocean, One Health”. This is the idea of taking a collaborative, multidisciplinary and transboundary and multisectoral approach to our global, interconnected issues around planetary health. It is now known that the health of our environment is closely linked with the health of our society, and to manage pollution is to manage our risk of exposure to harmful substances. The interconnected nature of human health, animal health and environment health can be challenging, in particular when dealing with a complex ocean and waterways system. Our rivers and oceans are where much of our waste eventually ends up, unfortunately. And now, especially during the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, it is crucial that we remember the important role of the ocean in our health systems, and the impact our societal practices have on our environment.
This webinar brought together leading academics from marine, social, and human health disciplines to discuss the intricate relationship between society, plastic pollution, and beach cleanups. We were delighted to host such an interesting presentation session as per the programme below, which then led into a panel discussion on knowledge gaps and emerging topics. We welcomed some fantastic and inspired questions from the audience members, and we hope to continue to encourage more discussion here in the online Forum.
So please, read through the programme below, watch the recording on YouTube through the link above, and ask your questions in the comment box below!
What are your thoughts on One Ocean, One Health?
How concerned are you about Microplastics risk to humans?
Have you engaged in a Beach Cleanup, and how did it make you feel?
What are your thoughts on the policy legislation frameworks around plastic pollution and microplastics?
Can you identify any more Knowledge Gaps than what were discussed in the video?
